The War On Cupcakes vs. Death By Drive-Thru.

posted Tuesday, 16 October 2007

Has the Onslaught Of Catalogs begun in your mailbox? Turns out you can do something about it: CatalogChoice. It's free. The only thing better than increasing recycling (which we hardly do at all) is reducing use.

Living in the future -- So, Cunning Realist raises the question, would it change your perception of anything if you found out the NSA pressured telecom companies to engage in illegal surveillance programs six months before 9/11?

This just frosts me -- Who among us will defend the ramparts in the War On Cupcakes?

You might be surprised to see exactly how Planned Parenthood spends its time.

Death By Drive-Thru -- That's what I like to call the arms race being fought by Hardees and Burger King in the competition to see who can contribute most to the self-inflicted extinction of the species. Hardees figured out that it had to get up pretty early in the morning to launch its latest.

(Yes, I know I just posted something else in defense of cupcakes. But cupcakes are dessert, and cakeycreamysweetbutnottoosweetdelicious, and they don't contain an entire day's allowance of saturated fat and salt. Like I said before regarding these kinds of menu offerings: everybody gets to try one, but with the second one, your co-pay should go up.)

The Next Picture Show -- Tom Petty is certainly no Cybill Shepherd, but director Peter Bogdanovich has nevertheless created a 3 DVD / 1 CD extravaganza about the former Floridian and his Heartbreakers, part documentary and part concert footage. As a longtime supporter of indie record stores and places that sell music but not dishwashers, I sum it up like this: it's priced to move, but it's only available at Best Buy, but it looks pretty sweet. I didn't mind when McCartney signed with Starbucks, so maybe I don't have much room to complain anymore.
(Any set that includes "Shadow Of A Doubt (Complex Kid)" is allllll right with me. Back in the band days, we'd open with that or "You Wreck Me" every now and then. I'd still rather be Roy Bittan than Benmont Tench, but only by a hair. Usually. And when she's dreaming, sometimes she sings in French ...)
